Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 20.07.2014

Cleopatra Borel finished third in the women’s shot put at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in London, England, yesterday. The Trinidad and Tobago field athlete produced a big 18.99 metres effort in the fourth and final round.

Germany’s Christina Schwanitz was the class of the field, winning the event with a 19.92m throw. American Michelle Carter (19.80m) secured the runner-up spot.

Borel has been in fine form this season. She threw 19.10m to win at a meet in Cuba in March. And in June, at the adidas Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meet, the Mayaro thrower landed the shot 19.04m to bag bronze.

On Friday, Borel threw 18.96m to finish fourth at the Herculis IAAF Diamond League meet, in Monaco.

Borel is preparing for the July 23-August 3 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and is among the potential medallists on the T&T team.

Borel has a history of Commonwealth Games success. At the 2002 Games in Manchester, England, she was fourth with a 16.27m throw. Four years later, in Melbourne, Australia, Borel improved to third, taking home the bronze medal with a 17.87m effort. She did even better at the 2010 Games, in Delhi, India, producing an impressive 19.03m throw to seize silver.
