Andrew Gioannetti :: Trinidad Guardian :: 22.07.2014

Hurdlers Aaron Lewis and Ruebin Walters will be the first T&T athletes to open their accounts at the IAAF World Junior Championships, which starts today in Eugene, Oregon, USA when they line up in the men’s 110m heats, at 1.55 pm (Local Time).

The World Junior Championships will get underway from 1 pm T&T time (10 am local time) with the women’s 100m hurdles segment of the heptathlon. Walters is among the T&T athletes who will carry high expectations based on current rankings. Walters is ranked 14th in the 110m hurdles. The semifinal will take place tomorrow from 8.35 pm (T&T time), with the finals carded for Thursday at 10.35 pm.

Also in action for T&T today is world number-one ranked quartermiler, Machel Cedenio, who will face the heats from 8.35 pm. He is expected to cruise into the finals, given his world leading time of 45.23 seconds recorded earlier this year, but is likely to face stiff competition from American pair Michael Cherry (45.37 season best) and Tyler Brown (45.74), who have also been in peak form.

The semifinals of the men’s 400m will follow a day later at 9.45pm, before the final which is set for Thursday from 10.45 pm.

The men’s 100m heats, which will feature John Mark Constantine and Jonathan Farinha, will take place from 3.50 pm. Zakiya Denoon and Aaliyah Telesford, who will represent T&T in the women’s 100m heats will be in action from 9.30pm.

Both the men’s and women’s 100m semi-finals and finals are carded for tomorrow’s afternoon session.

T&T’s promising 4x100m men and women’s teams will begin their quest for precious metal from Friday, a day before the final. The men’s 4x400m team will run their heats on the same day. The curtains will close on the competition, on Sunday with the men’s 4x400m final, which T&T will be expected to feature in.

The event will open from 1 pm (morning session) every day until Saturday. The afternoon session will run off from 9 pm on those days. The event will resume on Saturday from 5.30 pm and Sunday from 6 pm.
