Cut Games start today at Stadium

Timothy Frederick, who won four gold medals at this year’s National Juvenile Championships, will line up among T&T’s top Under-15 athletes at the two-day 15th biennial Caribbean Union of Teachers (Cut) Games, which will be hosted at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, starting today.

Frederick will represent this country in the Boys’ Under-15 division along with Josiah Edwards, Kirvon Flatts, Kyelon Edwards, Tyrik Horsford, Alvin McKenzie and Tyreses Bernard.

The T&T Under-15 girls will be led by Janae Sprinks and Melissa Boxhill, who have been in tremendous form throughout the year. In the same division for T&T are Deleth Charles, Jeneil Morris, Safiya John, Aaliyah Mitchell and Kerneka Waldron.

Also among the most promising representatives for T&T is Ethan Forde, who was recently named the most valuable athlete by the Port-of-Spain and Environs Sports Council. Forde was unbeaten his age group (Under-13) for the season and is expected to rack up medals in his sprints.

This year, the T&T team has had the set-back with the absense of Under-13 record-holder Adell Colthrust. However, multi-event champion Tyriq Horsford is expected to feature in the Boys Under-15 division.

In 2012, T&T finished third overall behind Barbados, with former champion and the competition host Jamaica left in second place.

Barbados finished with 17 gold medals, 17 silver and seven bronze for a total of 41. Although Jamaica closed with 42 medals (15 gold, 14 silver and 13 points), the host finished with 422.5 points, 37 fewer than Barbados. T&T was 30 points adrift off Jamaica.

T&T will be seeking to add to its two successes in the championship when action begins on Friday and head-coach Earl Bourne is cautiously confident that his team could surprise everyone on home soil.

“We have had a good camp and we are very happy with the performances at camp. We will be very competitive, and though Barbados will be coming to ensure they do the double and Jamaica sensing victory and regaining their status as champions, we must have a superb opportunity to return to winning ways.”

Jamaica will be seeking a fifth championship. Shadae Grant of Jamaica copped a fine double in 2012 when she captured the Girls' Under-11 200m.
