Romp to gold

Cedenio wins 400m at World Juniors

Trinidad and Tobago’s top junior athlete Machel Cedenio romped to gold in the men’s 400m on the third night of the IAAF World Junior Championships at Hayward Field, Eugene, Oregon, USA on Thursday.

Cedenio displayed his superior class as he outpaced and outstrode his rivals for one lap of the Stadium track to stop the clock in a world junior 2014 leading time of 45.13. The time was also a new national record that bettered his previous mark of 45.23 he did at the Cayman Invitational in the Cayman Islands back in March.

Cedenio took control of the race midway down the backstretch and opened up a big lead during the final 80 metres.

Japan’s Nobuya Kato was a distant second in a season’s best of 46.17 seconds, while Ali Khamis Abbas of Bahrain took the bronze in 46.20. The rest of the field read Alexander Sampao of Kenya fourth (46.55), Jack Crosby of Great Britain fifth (46.63), USA’s Lamar Bruton, sixth (46.75), Japan’s Kaisei Yui (47.08) seventh and USA’s Tyler Brown eighth (47.30).

“This win is especially good because I was injured earlier this season,” Cedenio said afterward.

“Honestly, I did know I had a 45.13 in me because I trained for this. I didn’t realise the lead I had before the race ended. I just executed my own race.”

Meanwhile, T&T’s Ruebin Walters finished sixth in the Men’s 110m hurdles final in a personal best of 13.52.

The champion was Wilhen Belocia in a world junior record time of 12.99. Jamaica’s Tyler Mason grabbed silver in a new national record of 13.06, with Great Britain’s David Omoregie nabbing the bronze in 13.33

Liberia’s Welington Zaza was fourth in 13.38, (a new national record) and France’s Benjamin Bedecias fifth in 13.47.

On Thursday night, Jonathan Farinha qualified for the final as the second of the two fastest losers in the men’s 200m.

He was fourth in heat one of three, crossing the line in 20.74 . He was headed by Great Britain’s Thomas Somers 20.37, Anguilla’s Zharnel Hughes (20.38) and Japan’s Masahara Muri 20.71. Farinha was due to run from lane two in the final after press time last night.

Unfortunately T&T’s Kayelle Thomas failed to qualify for the final in the women’s 200m.

In the third and final semi-final heat, she finished third in 23.76 in a race won by USA’s Kaylin Whitney (23.05) with Arialis Gandulla in the runner-up spot in 23.22.

And yesterday, Akilla Mc Shine finished seventh and last in heat five of the women’s 100m hurdle in 14.11, failing to advance.
