Trinidad and Tobago quarter miler Machel Cedenio struck gold at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championship, Eugene, Oregon on Thursday night.

Cedenio added World Junior Champion to his list off achievements after winning the boys’ 400 metre finals in a World Junior Leading time of 45.13 seconds which is also is personal best. Cedenio won by more than one second ahead of Japan’s Kato Nobuya (46.17) and Bahrain’s Abbas Abubakar Abbas (46.20) who placed second and third respectively.

Cedenio became TT’s seventh athlete to win a World Junior title following the likes of Ato Boldon (1995), Darrel Brown (2002), Rhonda Watkins (2006), Renny Quow (2006), Jehue Gordon (2010) and Keshorn Walcott (2012).

The 18-year-old was in an ecstatic mood yesterday following his struggles earlier this year.

“This win is especially good because I was injured earlier this season. Honestly, I did know I had a 45.13 in me because I trained for this. I didn’t realise the lead I had before the race ended. I just executed my own race,” Cedenio declared.

Meanwhile, TT 110m hurdler Ruebin Walter missed out on a medal after stumbling at the start of the race to finish in sixth position with a new personal best of 13.52 seconds.

In the boys 200m, Jonathan Farinha was able to secure a spot in last night’s finals after finishing fourth in his heat in a time of 20.74. He ran out of lane two in his finals. Kayelle Clarke was unable to secure a spot in the girls’ equivalent after finishing third in her semi-final heat in 23.44.

Shakeil Waithe finished sixth in the boys’ Javelin with a first throw attempt of 68.19m followed by two foul throws in the three round qualifier. He was able to secure a spot in the final tomorrow.

TT female shot putter Portious Warren failed to make it to the final in the girls shot put after placing tenth in Group A and 20th overall with a throw of 14.22m.

Another TT athlete, Akila McShine was unable to advance to the semi-final round of the girls’ 100m hurdles after finishing seventh in her heat in 14.11. In the boys’ 800m heats TT’s Nicholas Landeau finished eighth in heat four getting to the line in one minute 56.40 seconds. He too failed to qualify for tomorrow’s final.

Last night Farinha faced the starter in the boys 200m while the girls and boys 4x100m relay teams also ran off looking for spot in today’s finals. The girls team consists of Zakiya Denoon, Aaliyah Telesford, Kayelle Clarke, Mauricia Prieto and Trishelle Leacock. The boys team include Jonathan Farinha, John Mark Constantine, Holland Cabare and Micah Ballantyne.

Today the boys 4x400m relay team will be in action at 6.35 pm. The team, headed by Machel Cedenio, will be looking for a lane in tomorrow’s final. Asa Guevara, Odel James, Breon Mullings and Nathan Farinha are members of the team. They will be running in the first heat out of lane three.
