T&T’s Wallace, Horsford dominant at CUT Games

Trinidad and Tobago’s Caliyah Wallace was named Victrix Ludorum at the 15th Biennial Caribbean Union of Teachers (C.U.T.) Student Track and Field Championships, which ran from 25-26 July, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain.

Every two years, the best young athletes from the region enter the competition, which this year saw 13 countries, including defending champions Barbados, Jamaica, Bermuda and hosts Trinidad and Tobago among those competing.

Port of Spain & Environs and Cougar Athletic Club sprinter Wallace, emerged as best overall female performer, by winning both the Under-13 girls 100m (12.65 seconds) and 200m (25.82) sprints, and was also second in the 400m dash, behind Jamaican Tatyianna Palmer. Wallace recently also won the female Best Athlete Track and Field in the Port of Spain and Environs zone.

T&T’s Tyriq Horsford was also unbeaten. An allround athlete and one of the best young sprinters in the region, Horsford this year competed in the field events, where he won both the Under-15 male javelin (61,45m) and shot put (15.64m) events.

T&T also saw strong performances from boys Jaylon Bartholomew (U-9) of Caroni district and Port of Spain and Environs sprinter Ethan Forde (U-13), while Tobago’s Janea De Gannes (Under-9) , Xea Bruce (U-11) and Janea Spinks (U-15) excelled among the girls.

Bartholomew won the Under-9 boys 80m dash, before running second in the 150m dash, while Forde won the Under-13 100m dash and was second to Jamaican Anthony Haslam in the 200m.

Bruce was second in both the Under-11 girls 100m & 200m events, both times trailing Jamaican Brianna Lyston, while Spinks twice trailed Jamaican Kiara Grant in second spot, in the Under-15 girls 100m and 200m sprints. De Gannes leapt 3.51 metres to take first spot in the under-9 girls long jump.

Meanwhile, Jamaica dominated the relay events, wining all except the under-15 girls 4x100m relay, where they placed second to Barbados.
