Waithe in javelin final Junior 4x100 women 4th

SHAKEIL WAITHE was into last night’s javelin final, while 4 x 400m men’s team was eliminated after a fifth-place finish in their heat at the 2014 IAAF Junior World Championship in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

On Saturday night, the 4 x 100m women team only finished fourth, but were the best of two Trinidad and Tobago teams in relay finals, both won by the United States.

Waithe was the lone T&T athlete vying for honours last night, when reaching the javelin final as the sixth best qualifier with a 68.19 metre heave of the spear.

Earlier yesterday, the 4 x 400m men’s team clocked three minutes, 12.06 seconds, but finished down the field behind the United States (3:03.97) , Botswana, Australian and Cuba, only beating Belgium in heat one.

Led off in lane three by Asa Guevara, T&T trailed for much of the contest and by the time 400m champion Machel Cedenio got the baton, he was some 100 metres adrift of the USA and Botswana teams, who had kicked well clear of the field.

Cedenio managed to pass the Belgium runner, as T&T finished fifth of six teams.

Both T&T sprint teams failed to medal on Friday night. The women 4 x 100m team had gone into the final, possibly vying for bronze with third-best qualifiers Brazil. But, although the Brazilians failed to complete the event, the T&T team of Aaliyah Telesford, Mauricia Prieto, Zakiya Denoon and Kayelle Clarke were edged for third by the Germans (44.65).

Telesford led off the T&T women, who fell back a bit by the end of three legs.

On the final leg, Clarke was closing fast after getting the baton some way adrift in fourth, but only just failed to catch the German.

T&T clocked 44.75 seconds. As expected the top qualifiers United States (43.46) and Jamaica (43.97) filled the top two positions.

The United States (38.72) also completed the sprint relay double by beating Japan (39.02) in the 4 x 100m men’s relay, with Jamaica (39.12) third. Running from lane seven, the T&T (39.92) consisting of Holland Cabara, Jonathan Farinha, Micah Ballantyne and John-Mark Constantine finished sixth.
