Prime, Ryce, Smith shine at NACAC

Trinidad and Tobago had a good showing in the North, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) World Masters Athletics Championships which ended yesterday at the National Stadium in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The event was open to athletes aged 30 and over from any country of the world and T&T had 31 athletes competing both in track and field events.

On the track, Oswald Rogers won the men's 75-79 100m in 14.72 seconds with Daniel Laurence second in 17.59 seconds. T&T swept the top four spots in the 100m 50-54 category with Martin Prime winning in 11.65, Lester Herbert second in 11.95, and Irvin Thomas third in 11.96.

Philbert Ryce won the 100m 40-44 category in 10.97 while teammate Albert St Louis took silver in 10.98. In the 30-34 100m final, Dwayne Caines took first place in 11.05 seconds.

Rogers and Laurence finished one-two in the 200m with times of 30.58 and 39.03, respectively, in the 75-79 category, while Caines won the 30-34 category in 22.18 seconds. Amin Siddiq won the 200m 65-69 category in 28.33 and also won the 400m race in 1:04.3.

Meanwhile, Prime, Herbert and Thomas swept the top three spots in the 200m 50-54 race. Their times were 23.86, 24.57 and 24.78, respectively. Ryce won the 40-44 200m event in 22.09 seconds while Andie Montique won the 45-49 category, clocking 23.70.

Jules La Rode won the 40-44 1,500 metres race in 4:13.36 and also won the 5,000m race in 16:23.60.

Elsewhere, Rodney Liverpool won the 35-39 high jump with a 1.95m effort while Peter Springer was second with a 1.80m jump and Brent Clarke third with a 1.75m effort. Liverpool also won the 35-39 long jump with a 6.32m effort while Clarke was second with a 5.96m jump.

Wade Franklyn won the 50-54 discus (39.19m) and shot put (13.62m), while Curtis Brereton won the 800m 50-54 race in 2:19.86.

Among the T&T women, Gwendelyn Smith was outstanding, winning the 50-54 shot put (13.60m), discus (26.42m) and javelin (40.97m) events.
