Borel takes on World Challenge

Newsday :: 31.08.2014

The consistent Cleopatra Borel will be hoping for more of the same today when she competes in the women’s shot put event at the IAAF World Challenge Meeting in Berlin, Germany.

Borel, who is seventh on the IAAF world rankings this year with a season best throw of 19.10 metres set in La Habana, has thrown five times over 18 metre for the year already in competition.

The 35-year-old secured a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland with a 18.52m throw. And last weekend, she got bronze at the Birmingham Grand Prix in Brussels while throwing 18.62m.

She will be competing against favourite Christina Schwanitz of Germany who has cleared 20m this season.

Meanwhile, top TT sprinters Richard Thompson and Keston Bledman will face the starter’s pistol in the men’s 100m. Both athletes are coming off a disappointing Commonwealth Games performance after failing to make the men’s 100m finals.

On Thursday at the IAAF Diamond League Meet at Weltklasse, Zurich, Thompson finished seventh in the men’s 100m event, crossing the line in 10.26. Bledman, a former national champion, finished second in the 100m at the Diamond League Meeting DN Galan, Stockholm, last week, in 10.09 seconds.
