J’ca to represent Americas at IAAF Continental Cup

Trinidad Express :: 02.09.2014

Eleven Jamaican athletes have been invited to represent the Americas at the IAAF Continental Cup starting in Marrakech, Morocco next weekend. They include Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jason Morgan, the first ever discus thrower selected from Jamaica to compete at the Continental Cup.

He joins Commonwealth Games champions Kaliese Spencer, Stephenie McPherson, and O’Dayne Richards, as well as Veronica Campbell-Brown, Novlene Williams-Mills, Kimberly Williams, Nesta Carter, and Christine Day.

“It feels like my honest hard work and dedication is being rewarded slowly but surely,” said Morgan. “I have always had a vision of breaking down barriers in the discus throw, and it is evident that vision is becoming reality”.

The Jamaican athletes are expected to be in Marrakech by Sunday for the games on September 13 and 14. The team representing the Americas is also expected to include World triple jump champion Caterine Ibarguen, World Indoor champion Francena McCorory, sprint hurdler Dawn Harper-Nelson, 400-metre hurdler Javier Culson, US shot putter Joe Kovacs, 800-metre runner Ajee Wilson, as well as Brazilian pole vaulter Fabiana Murer, and long jumper Tianna Bartole.

Formerly known as the IAAF World Cup, the competition takes place every four years and pits continents against each other.
