Quow wins in Italy

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 02.09.2014

Renny Quow was in winners’ row in his first outing since the Commonwealth Games, the Trinidad and Tobago athlete stopping the clock at 45.13 seconds for gold in the men’s 400 metres event, at the 50th Palio Citta della Quercia meet, in Rovereto, Italy, yesterday.

Quow was a comfortable winner, finishing well ahead of second-placed Rusheen McDonald, the Jamaican completing his lap of the track in 45.47. Russian Maxim Dyldin, meanwhile, was a distant third in 46.06.

Quow’s 45.13 seconds effort was his second fastest clocking this season, behind the 45.08 run he had produced in June to capture the NGC/Sagicor National Open Track and Field Championship title.

At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Quow was a non-finisher in the individual 400m final. The Tobago quartermiler felt tightness in his legs, and aborted his medal bid. However, he was back on the track for the 4x400m championship race, teaming up with Lalonde Gordon, Jarrin Solomon and Zwede Hewitt to secure bronze for T&T in three minutes, 01.51 seconds.

At the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial IAAF World Challenge meet, in Zagreb, Croatia, yesterday, Richard “Torpedo” Thompson was sixth in the men’s 100m dash. The T&T sprinter got to the line in 10.31 seconds to finish one spot ahead of 2003 world champion Kim Collins (10.32), of St Kitts and Nevis.

Commonwealth Games champion Kemar Bailey-Cole emerged victorious in 10.07 seconds, the same time clocked by his fellow-Jamaican, runner-up Asafa Powell. American Mike Rodgers was third in 10.10, while Briton Chijindu Ujah (10.26) and another American, Ryan Bailey (10.27) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
