Scotia Women 5k a success

Newsday :: 15.09.2014

Despite overcast skies and rain in Port-of-Spain, women from all over flocked to the Queen’s Park Savannah to take part in the 16th Annual Scotiabank Women Against Breast Cancer 5K Classic on Saturday.

The event took place at three venues in the country —Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain; Skinner’s Park, San Fernando and Tobago.

There was a massive turnout in Port-of-Spain yesterday with women from all over TT and even the neighbouring Venezuela participating.

Venezuelan national Agenelia-Thais Gutierr was the first to cross the finish line followed by Lily Stauble and Jodi Gomez who were second and third respectively.

The event attracted several first-timers as well as the regulars such as Kaylin-Keva Lewis, who has been taking part in the event for over four years with her family.

She said she enjoys taking part and is already looking forward to next year.

“It’s a wonderful event. I’ve been coming to this for over four years with my mother,” she said, “I think it’s a great thing, and every year it’s more and more people.

It’s good to see the awareness for breast cancer and the support it’s getting. I’m already looking forward to next year.” Dr Mark Pounder, Director of Scotiabank Foundation, described the event as tremendously successful and was happy with the turnout.

He noted that the event has been growing over the years and is continuing to grow.

“The event was sold out even before registration was closed, we had a massive turnout today and we are very happy about it. Between here, San Fernando and Tobago we have six thousand supporters,” he continued.
