Walcott hoping for great 2015

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 15.09.2014

Keshorn Walcott closed off a satisfying 2014 season with bronze at the IAAF Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco, on Sunday. The reigning Olympic men’s javelin champion is now looking forward to his 2015 campaign.

“My main competition is going to be World Championships, so everything going into that is going to be a build-up.There’s Pan Am Games, there’s CAC (Championships). I’m just going to take things step by step, and hopefully next year we’re going to have a great year.”

Walcott secured Continental Cup bronze with an 83.52 metres throw.

“Could have been better. I had a few good throws, and ended up fouling them...not something I normally do, so I’m a bit disappointed.

“It was my first time (on African soil),” Walcott continued, “and I did pretty well. My season’s over. I’m thankful for the blessing this season, and hopefully I’ll come stronger.”

In early August, Walcott threw 82.67m to pick up silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. His best 2014 performance, however, came on August 28 at the Weltklasse IAAF Diamond League finals in Zurich, Switzerland, where he finished second with a big 85.77m effort—a new Trinidad and Tobago record.

Like Walcott, Cleopatra Borel represented Americas at the IAAF Continental Cup. The T&T field athlete threw the iron ball 18.68m to finish fifth in the women’s shot put. Borel opened with an 18.63m throw, and followed up at 18.40m, 18.68m and 18.65m.

“The competition was okay. I was really consistent at 18.60. Overall, I’m pleased with the performance because my practices weren’t so good.

“It’s been awesome,” Borel continued, “to meet and mingle with athletes from all over the Americas. We kind of see each other at track meets and say ‘hi’, but I got to know everyone a little bit better, the atmosphere was really good, and I felt like I really put a fight in there for the Americas. I did my best, so I’m happy with that.

“2014 was great for me, especially looking back at 2013 where my season’s best was about 17.80 (17.84m). I’m really happy, really pleased, proud. The season isn’t over yet, but it’s been good so far.”

On September 5, Borel produced a season’s best throw of 19.13m in finishing fourth at the Memorial Van Damme IAAF Diamond League finals in Brussels, Belgium. Her focus is now on the November 14-30 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Veracruz, Mexico.
