Newsday Save the Children 5k a success

Newsday :: 26.09.2014

The 2014 edition of the Newsday Save the Children Fund 5k race was a success, if one is to look at the large turnout of runners, old and young, who competed in the event at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain on Wednesday.

Over 300 runners, regulars and the ‘not-so-regulars’ faced the starter at 4 pm and, moments later, Kelvin Johnson covered the distance (starting and finishing opposite TGI Fridays) in 15 minutes and 59 seconds.

There was a virtual sprint for the next two places, as Lionel Dandrade took second place in 16 minutes and 17 seconds, while Sherwin Stapleton was third in 16 minutes 26 seconds.

The first female runner to complete the race was Samantha Shukla, as she was timed in 18 minutes 39 seconds, followed by Dawnell Collymore, who ran 19 minutes 44 seconds, and Shania Francis, who stopped the clock in 20 minutes one second.

Acting Newsday Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Maria Cooper was among the runners on show, and she was the first female employee of Daily News Limited to cross the finish line, while Marlon Moore of Advertising Sales was the first male employee to finish.

Newsday’s Editor in Chief Jones P Madeira and Associate Editor John Babb were also on hand to witness the race and participate in the prize-giving ceremony, which was hosted by entertainer Errol Fabien.

There were a number of children at the afternoon’s event, and even though they did not participate in the race, they had the opportunity to partake in the bouncy castle, indulge in face painting, as well as purchase cotton candies, popcorn and snow cones. Proceeds from the event will go towards the Newsday Save the Children’s Fund.
