Final CAC fitness tests tomorrow

Trinidad Express :: 09.10.2014

With next month’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Veracruz, Mexico fast approaching, the Trinidad and Tobago will be conducting final fitness tests this weekend.

A release from TTOC president Brian Lewis yesterday said that the last beep test is scheduled for the Jean Pierre Complex from 9 a.m. tomorrow.

The test is to establish the basic fitness levels of athletes likely to be competing in Mexico. Tomorrow’s exercise will include locally based athletes and those involved in team sports, but will exclude competitors taking part in timed sports such as track and field, swimming, cycling and triathlon.

TTOC secretary general Annette Knott, and chef de mission for the upcoming Games said the TTOC will not tolerate or accept attempts by National Sporting Organisations (NSOs) to compromise or subvert its fitness and selection policy or process.

“None of the NSOs can say that they don’t know what is the process or standard. Once an event is under the TTOC we stand by our process,” she said.

The Olympic Committee has to submit its team to Games officials by Tuesday, so tomorrow’s test is the final opportunity for athletes and team sports to meet the fitness standard.

The release said the TTOC general council will convene today at Olympic House to “receive, consider and approve the recommendations of the executive committee in respect of the proposed CAC Games team.”

The TTOC release also said, “the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago’s Elite Development Unit and the Michael Johnson Performance Centre has worked together since May this year to ensure that in particular, team sports and locally based athletes desirous of qualifying and participating at the Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympic Games and Central American and Caribbean( CAC) Games had the sport science based support, advice and programmes to address any shortcomings or deficiencies.”
