Trinidad Guardian :: 01.11.2014

Swimmer George Bovell III, track and field duo Cleopatra Borel and Ayanna Alexander, and shooter Roger Daniel, all former gold medal winners head a list of 197 T&T athletes who will represent this country at the 22nd Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games which gets underway in Veracruz, Mexico, from today until November 25.

The 31-year-old Bovell III, who recently returned home from another successful FINA/Mastbank World Cup season, is the two-time defending champion in the men’s 50m freestyle having won the last two events in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, (2010) and 2006 in Cartagena, Colombia, and Borel is the reigning women’s shot put champion.

In addition, Alexander is the defending women’s triple jump gold medal winner and Daniel, the gold medalist in the men’s 25m standard pistol.

Last time out, T&T captured 34 medals, nine gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze for eighth spot on the medal table and second best among Caribbean countries behind Jamaica which won 42 medals, 15 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze.

The T&T contingent, led by Chef de Mission Annette Knott, can boast as being one of the strongest women’s contingents to participate in a multi-sport games representing the red, white and black.

With 97 female athletes from a contingent of 200 and a number of women’s officials on both the medical team and technical staff these games will feel the full power of the T&T women.

They include the Soca Princesses who will host Ecuador on December 2, in a 2015 FIFA Inter-Continental World Cup second-leg playoff after a 0-0 draw in Quito last Saturday in the first-leg.

Overall, T&T women will be represented in five team sports, football, rugby, hockey, volleyball both indoor and beach, and basketball.

There are also a few firsts in the young women members of the team, with open-water swimming being represented for the first time by the two young David sisters, Syriah and Sania while Kelly-Ann Arriandale is the first woman sailor to compete at the Games.

In the team sports, the women’s hockey squad will also defend their title.
