St Fort bids for Carifta spot

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 09.03.2017

Khalifa St Fort will be at the Hasely Crawford Stadium this weekend, bidding for a spot on Trinidad and Tobago's 2017 Carifta Games team. The Florida-based sprinter is the reigning Carifta Games Girls Under-20 100 metres champion, and is expected to defend her title at the April 15-17 regional junior championships in Curacao.

St Fort's training partner, Sarah Wollaston will also be on show at the trials. Both St Fort and Wollaston are listed for the Girls Under-20 100m and 200m events. The T&T sprinters are coached by quadruple Olympic medallist Ato Boldon. Another member of Boldon's Miramar, Florida training camp, Kelsha Fortune could be a contender in the Girls Under-20 400m.

St Fort is the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championship women's 100m bronze medallist, and will undoubtedly be the main attraction at this weekend's trials. Also in the spotlight is two-time Carifta Games boys' under-18 javelin champion Tyriq Horsford.

At a development meet in Tobago last month, Horsford landed the 700-gramme spear 73.17 metres. However, the huge throw was not recognised as a national youth (Under-18) record.
