Nero shines in Dubai Commonwealth Games berth for T&T marathoner

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 26.01.2018

Tonya Nero produced a fine run in yesterday's Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, in the United Arab Emirates. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete completed the 26.2-mile course in two hours, 47 minutes, 13 seconds to secure 18th spot in the women's race.

Halfway through, Nero was on course for a sub-2:41 marathon. And though she slowed slightly, the 29-year-old was still set to beat her 2:43:14 personal best as she approached the 22-mile mark. But the closing stages of the race proved to be very challenging for Nero, and she was unable to better her best.

"I felt really great," Nero told the Express, "but my last four miles were the hardest."

Nero's impressive 2:47:13 clocking in Dubai was almost three minutes faster than the 2:50 qualifying standard set for the April 4-15 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
