Shukla chases honours in cross country championships

National cross country champion Samantha Shukla will tackle some of the region's top middle-distance runners at the Pan American/North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (PAN AM/NACAC) Cross Country Championships in El Salvador tomorrow.

Shukla of the Richard Jones Racing (RJR) is the lone woman on the local team which include Shirvan Baboolal (RJR) and Defence Force's George Smith in the men's category along with Kriston Charles (RJR) and Genesis Joseph (Health Olympians), who will compete in the Under-20 division.

Richard Jones will served as coach while Dawn Washington is the manager of the team. The contingent left over the past two days to compete at the event which will be held in the Cavalry Regiment in Opico that has hosted various local, regional Central American Cross Country Championships.

Last year, both Shukla and Baboolal competed at the NACAC Cross-Country Championships in Boca Raton, Florida, USA.

Then Shukla raced in the women's 8km and clocked 31 minutes and 33.57 seconds to place 18th, the same position as Baboolal, who was the highest placed local in the men's 8km race crossing the line in 26:11.85.

Some 180 athletes from 20 countries including Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and the host nation are expected to participate.
