Bascombe wins U-17 100 metres sprint

NAAA 2018 CARIFTA TRIALS

Fourteen-year old Shaniqua Bascombe of Cougars Track and Field Club ran the fastest time in all the Girls Under-17 100 metres sprint when she clocked a time of 11:89 seconds on the First Day of the NGC/NAAATT 2018 Carifta Games Trials out at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday. The qualifying time is 12.05 seconds.

In her first round heat Bascombe cruised home in 12:15 seconds, but qualified for the Carifta Games in April with her time. She was followed by Leah Betrand of Simplex in 12:24 seconds and Brianna Lord of Abilene in 12:50.

Koneel Jacob and Clarence Hannibal of Tobago Jaguars and Falcon were the first to qualify after they threw the Discus in the Boys Under-20 event 50.90 metres and 47.26 metres respectively to finish ahead of the set distance of 47 metres.

Avindale Smith of Abilene Wildcats, cruised home in the Under-17 Boys 400 metres and attained the benchmark (49.50 seconds) by producing a 47.90 seconds for the lone lap event.

Patrice Richards of Neon Wolves clocked 15.02 seconds to win the girls Under-17 100 metres hurdles event some 19 of a second faster than the standard set.

In the Under-17 Girls 400 metres run, Rae-Anne Serville clocked 55.02 seconds to qualify for the event ahead of the young Natasha Fox who race around the track in 56.50 seconds. The qualifying time set is 57.00 seconds.

There were some close calls on the day with Tyrell Edward missing out in the Under-20 Boys 100 metres final after he clocked 10.69. Joanna Rogers of Cougars also missed out with her run of 57.36 seconds in the Under-20 Girls 400 metres event.

It was the same in the Girls Under-20 category when Concorde Athletes Jenea Spinks and Akilah Lewis finished 1-2, but their times were off the required qualifying standard.

Today will see action in many other events
