Smith upgraded to gold

In less than 24-hours Avindale Smith had his silver medal won in the boys under-17 400 metres contest upgraded to gold after the judges found that Barbadian Kyle Gale, who won the race had violated rule 163.3 during the final on Friday afternoon at the Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas.

Gale's run was a record performance after he clocked 47.07 seconds. It was not so much that he broke the record but the fact the old mark belonged to Jamacia's Usain Bolt who retired last year as undoubtedly the greatest sprinter the world has seen.

Hometown boy Raymond Oriaki improved from bronze to silver with his 47.75 seconds and Jamaica's Malichi Johnson, who was fourth get the bronze after his 48.42 seconds run. Smith and Veayon Joseph, the boys under-17 javelin champion, are T&T two gold medallist so far.

Meanwhile, Patrice Richards secured T&T sixth medal, a bronze on day 2 of competition in the Girls under-17 400 metres Hurdles event. Richards clocked 1:02.56 to finish behind race winner Jamaica's Calisha Taylor, who clocked 1:01.04 second with Indea Cartwright of the Bahamas second in 1:0217. Only five runners contested the event.

In the boys Under-20 400 metres run, T&T's representative Onal Mitchell had to settle for sixth place with a time of 48.16 seconds. The race was won by Jamaican Dashawn Morris in 46.58 seconds.

Che Saunders came up short in his effort to medal for T&T when he finished fifth in the boys Under-17 high jump coontest after producing a height of just 1.85 metres. Jamaica's Romaine Beckford secured the gold medal with a leap of 2.00 metres.
