Boldon sends Ahye golden congrats

Trinidad Guardian :: 10.04.2018

As Michelle-Lee Ahye wrote her name into the history books by becoming the first woman from T&T to win a gold medal in track at the Commonwealth Games, four-time Olympic medallist Ato Boldon told Guardian Media Sports, it was a proud and great day for the sport in this country.

"Well, the race was always going to be historic for us because to have three T&T women in a final of any kind, does not happen every day and I am pretty sure it is the first time it has happened," said Boldon, who is a well respected and acclaimed track and field analyst with the NBC network in the USA.

Boldon is also coach of 20-year-old Khalifa St Fort, who contested yesterday's final, but placed sixth in a time of 11.37 seconds.

"I had been really concerned about Khalifa's start because the one thing that is usually a constant with her is her start and that sort of deserted her in the rounds. I also knew that Michelle would be the one to beat, given that field because that is the kind of race that she and everybody expected her to win. Props to her for accomplishing the task and getting the win," said Boldon, who holds the Commonwealth Games record of 9.88 seconds in the 100 metres finals.

He is hopeful that St Fort will improve over time and drew reference to his own pathway to success for T&T.

"In terms of Khalifa, these are her first three 100's of the year. She has been behind in practice and really been playing kind of catch up this year so I'm happy to see her make that final. I was fourth or fifth in my first Commonwealth final and then set the record four years later. As usual she is kind of mimicking my path. In four years I expect her to be contending for medals, but well done to all of the three T&T ladies," said Boldon.
