Consolation record for Brooks

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 12.04.2018

Alena Brooks was at her best at the Carrara Stadium here in Gold Coast, Australia, yesterday, running the race of her life to break a 13-year-old national record. The Trinidad and Tobago half-miler clocked two minutes, 01.81 seconds to finish fifth in heat three in the Commonwealth Games women's 800 metres qualifying round.

But while Brooks was thrilled to erase Melissa De Leon's 2:02.27 T&T standard from the books, she fell short of her championship race goal, finishing 17th overall.

"I'm disappointed I didn't make the final," Brooks told the Express, "but I can't complain. I've targeted the record for a while, and I'm happy I finally got it. Melissa's such a great athlete, and she always gives me words of encouragement, so I know she'll be happy for me as well."
