NERO BEATS HEAT

Trinidad and Tobago 18th on medal table

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 16.04.2018

Tonya Nero overcame the sweltering heat here in Gold Coast, Australia, yesterday, to complete the 2018 Commonwealth Games women's marathon. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete crossed the finish line at Southport Broadwater Parklands in two hours, 55 minutes, 14 seconds to secure 14th spot in the 26.2-mile race.

A 7.20am start exposed the runners to unforgiving heat, the cloudless sky leaving Nero and company unprotected from a merciless morning sun.

"The course is a good course," Nero told the Express, "mostly flat, but the heat was a little bit different. Of the five marathons I've done, this is the hottest."
