Badoolal, Chenge win Metronomes 5K race

Trinidad Guardian :: 03.06.2018

Shirvan Baboolal was challenged throughout the entire course of the first Metronomes Sports and Cultural Club 5K Road race but he had enough in him to cross the finish line first at the Govindra Roopnarine Recreation Grounds, Dabidial Road, Rock Road Penal on Wednesday, Indian Arrival Day.

He clocked 16 minutes and 10 seconds to prevail in a race to finish against a worthy opponent in Shurlan Williams, who held on for second place in a close 16.13. Kelvin Johnson secured third place in a time of 16.20 seconds in an event which attracted some 500 participants and included elite athletes from across T&T.

Among them were national runner Samantha Shukla, who again followed Kenyan Queen Njoki Chenge to the finish line in the women's version of the race, just as she did in Eastern 15K last month. In fact, just as in that race, Sjaelan Evans filled the third spot.

Chenge won in a time of 18 minutes and 35 seconds with Shukla second in 19.09 seconds and Evsns third in 20.09 seconds.

Cash prizes were awarded to overall and age category winners that exceeded $15,000, while all participants received a signature medal upon completion.

Sports clubs represented included Richard Jones Racing, One a Week, Five Star Fitness, SABRES Multi Sports Club, Fun Runners Club, South Cross Athletics and other top running clubs.

Participants were treated to Tassa music by the Penal Sea Scouts and the route featured water stops by Penal Sea Scouts, police escorts, and traffic wardens.

The participants were also treated to a mini health fair as part of the Metronomes Club's commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles within the community of Penal and environs, which is known for its prowess in the cricket and fitness arena.

Free physical training is offered at the Govindra Roopnarine Recreation Grounds, by a certified trainer, Sharma Maharaj on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The training arm of the club has been in existence for the past 10 years.
