Cougars on course for Juvenile Champs title

COUGARS Track and Field Club are on course to win the 2018 National Association of Athletics Administrations NGC Juvenile Championships, after a convincing performance on day one at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Saturday.

Cougars lead the points standings with 271 points after 24 events, Memphis Pioneers are second on 130 points and Simplex are third with 81 points. Cougars won the National Junior Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium last weekend. 

Janika Jordan was one of the outstanding athletes for Cougars. In the girls Under-13 shot put finals, Jordan was in a dominant mood, recording a top throw of 6.25 metres to claim gold easily. Jordan's teammate Nicola Sheppard copped silver with a 4.97m attempt and Jael Morgan of Mercury ended third with a 4.31m effort.

Jordan showed she is a versatile athlete, winning gold in the girls Under-13 400m final in 1:02.78, ahead of teammate Kayleigh Forde (1:03.31) and Amaya Mitchell of Abilene (1:03.70).

In the boys Under-13 ball throw finals, Antonio Smith of Abilene won gold comfortably with an effort of 63.25m. It was a battle for silver between Joshua Gonzales of Toco Tafac and Je'Shaugn Louis of Zenith. Gonzales took silver with a 52.95m throw, beating Louis who took bronze with a 52.94m attempt.

In the girls Under-13 high jump, Janae De Gannes of Zenith copped gold with a 1.52m effort and Gianna Paul of DPAC took silver with a 1.48m leap. There was a three-way tie for third place between J'Elisha Alexander (Jaguars), Shamiah Farrel (PFNJ) and Sinobi Marshall (DPAC) as the trio all had a top effort of 1.20m. 

The championships continue Sunday from 10 am.
