Event Report : Carifta Trials : Day 2 : Day 1

PORT_OF_SPAIN, Trinidad: (Mon, 13, March) World Junior 100m bronze medallist Khalifa St. Fort (Unattached) and Avindale Smith (Abilene Wildcats) were double sprint champions at the 2017 NGC/NAAA Trinidad and Tobago Carifta Games Trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. On the second and final day (Sunday, 12, March), St. Fort captured the girls under 20 200m title in 23.64 seconds to add the 100m crown she secured on Saturday (11, March). The 2016 Olympian dismissed the field and matched the time she ran in her victory at the 2016 Trials. She dipped under the 24.00 Carifta qualifying standard. Shikyla Walcott (Simplex) was beaten in second as in the 100m in 24.48 with St. Fort's training partner Sarah Wollaston (Unattached) finishing in third (24.87). Smith completed the boys under 18 sprint triumph after he took home the 200m in 21.24 (pb). The 15 year old led a sweep of the top three places by his club_mates as 100m runner_up Adel Colthrust (21.69) and 400m winner Che Lara (21.88) were behind. All three were faster than the 22.05 standard. Colthrust started swiftly in a bid to get revenge on Smith and reverse the results of the 100m but Smith's top end speed pushed him clear of the Colthrust. Ayla Stanislaus (Zenith) was able to turn the tables on Akilah Lewis in the girls under 20 200m taking the title in 24.48. Lewis, the 100m winner ahead of Stanislaus, blasted out of the blocks held the lead up to 30m before the line. However, Stanislaus finished strongly and dipped sharply to take the crown. The 400m winner Rae-Anne Serville (Memphis Pioneers), was in contention as she pressed to take the lead stumbled and fell. Deleth Charles (Memphis Pioneers) finished in third (25.00). Serville got up and finished the race in eighth (31.31), with no visible injuries.

Jerod Elcock (Abilene Wildcats) added the 200m to his win in the boys under 20 100m. Elcock got the line in 21.24, matching the time of Smith in winning the under 18 class. Jalen Purcell (Simplex) followed Elcock in 21.40 in repeat of the top two finishes of the 100m. Elcock improved on his 21.35 clocking in the semifinals ahead of Purcell (21.36) as they were under the 21.40 standard on both occasions. Smith and Elcock led the Abilene Wildcats boys dominance in sprints as the boys 100, 200m and 400m sprints all were won by Abilene. Che Lara (boys under 18) and Jacob St. Clair (boys under 20) captured the one lap crowns for the Arima-based club.

Two-time Carifta champion and record holder Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) led the qualifiers in the field events. Horsford secured the boys under 18 javelin with a top throw of 70.94m. All four of his legal efforts were better than the 59.00m standard and second place, his club-mate Kareem Peters, 53.46m. Horsford's Zenith club swept all the javelin events. Odel Joefield took the boys under 20 event with a 58.32m ahead of another Zenith athlete Vandel Joseph 57.93). Both surpassed the 57.00m standard. On Saturday Zenith's Kymoi Noray (girls under 18 javelin) and Asha James (girls under 20 javelin) also won with Carifta qualifying performances. Konnel Jacob (Tobago Jaguars) took home the boys under 20 shot put triumph. Jacob put the ball out to a personal best of 16.72 to hold off Isaiah Taylor (Abilene Wildcats), 16.61 as the two were over the 15.90 standard. Randolph Isaac (Burnley) joined the list of qualifying athletes when he attained the 44.30 mark in the boys under 18 discus with a winning effort of 44.45. Jaydon Antoine (Neon Wolves) and Shaquille Benjamin (Kaizen Panthers) finished 1-2 in the boys under 18 high jump both clearing 1.90m, the qualifying standard.

The Kaizen Panthers duo of Anya Akili (girls open heptathlon) and Kerlon Ashby (boys open octathlon) secured the multi-events titles. Akili, who won bronze in the event at the 2016 Carifta Games, took the girls seven discipline event with a tally of 4469 points ahead of her club-mate Safiya John (4331). Antonia Sealy (Unattached), 4308 and May Dumpson (Neon Wolves) were third and fourth. The top four were over the 3900 Carifta qualifying standard. Akili held the lead after the end of the first four events (100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m) on first day with 2755 points with John (26790 and Sealy (2666) behind. On the second day, Akili extended her advantage after the completion of the long jump and javelin. In the final event (800m) she finished fourth of the five competitors ahead of John but earned enough point to take the overall win ahead of John. Ashby claimed the boys' eight event competition with a total of 5237, getting over the 5050 standard. Aaron Caesar (Pt. Fortin New Jets) was score of 4974 was good enough for second while Nathaniel Mathura (D'Abadie Progressive) was well back in third with 3205.

Over the day of action forty athletes (18 girls and 22 boys) attained the Carifta standards set by the NAAA for this year's Carifta Games scheduled for Willamsted, Curacao from April 15-17.

Please note: Safiya John (girls under 18 long jump) and Avindale Smith (boys under 18 400m), Judah Taylor (boys under 20 200m and Jacob Taylor (Abilene Wildcats) also posted qualifying times before the Trials. However, at the trials John did not achieve the standard in the long jump. Smith did not compete in the 400m neither did Taylor and Jacob in the 200m.

The NAAA is expected to name a team later this week to compete in Barbados on the weekend before the final selection for the Carifta Games is made.
