Women Sprint Doubles at National Championships

Bernard Linley Track & Field Retrospect by Bernard Linley :: 28.06.2017

When Michelle-Lee Ahye won both 100m and 200m titles (10.82/22.50) in June 2017 it was her third sprint double at the national championships.

Interestingly at the first championships in 1947, another young sprinter Pearl Gooding took both sprint races, then contested over 75 yards and 120 yards (9.0/13.8). Gooding who turns 87 next August, according to a recent newspaper interview, captured both sprint titles a second time in 1949.

Eileen King, who had taken both sprints at the 1948 championships, repeated this feat in 1951, when the women`s programme was changed to 100 yards and 220 yards (11.2/25.8).

Between 1956 and 1961, the year after the championships turned metric (100m/200m), Sybil Allen-Dommartin competed the double no less than five times.

Since 1961 only four sprinters have recorded more than one championships double.

Angela Williams (1988 and 1991) and Hydiane Harper (1992 and 1994) did so on two occasions, and then Fana Ashby (1997, 2001, 2003) and Ahye (2014, 2016, 2017) each managed a triple double!

Bets are open on whether Ahye will score a fourth double in the near future
