Barranquilla: From 1946 To 2018

Bernard Linley Track & Field Retrospect by Bernard Linley :: 06.08.2018

The Colombian coastal city of Barranquilla has hosted the CAC Games twice, in 1946 and in 2018.

At the most recent edition TTO athletes won 9 medals (2 gold), while at the 1946 games our all male team came home with 7 medals (2 gold).

Interestingly, 72 years ago the gold medals came in running events (1500m Wilfred Tull, and 5000m Mannie Ramjohn), and this year in throwing events (shot Cleopatra Borel, and javelin Keshorn Walcott).

Back in 1946 the two silver medals came in middle distance races (800m Tull, 1500m Ken Hyland) and the three bronze medals at 800m (Hyland), 100m (McDonald Bailey) and 4x100m (George Lewis, Leo Pierre, Albert McLean and Bailey).

However, the distribution of our medals in 2018 was different, five by women and four by men.

In addition to Borel`s gold, our female athletes took four silver medals: 100m (Khalifa St Fort), 200m (Semoy Hackett), 800m (Alena Brooks) and 4x100m (Zakia Denoon, Hackett, St Fort and Reyare Thomas).

Besides the gold of Walcott, high hurdler Ruebin Walters won silver, and bronze medals came from 200m sprinter Kyle Greaux and long jumper Andwuelle Wright.

The next CAC Games are scheduled for April 2022 in Panama City, host of previous games in 1938 and 1970.

TTO was not present in 1938 and in 1970 took no medals, but had three finals places: 4th in 4x100m, 5th in 100m (Hasely Crawford) and 6th in women`s 100m (Joan Porter).

With the ongoing progress of our track and field we can expect that at the close of Panama 2022, in less than four years, our medal count would be better than the 0-0-0 of Panama 1970 and even the 2-5-2 of Barranquilla 2018.
