Hislop, Elcock fail to medal at Pan Am

Walter Alibey :: Trinidad Guardian :: 22.07.2017

T&T's Akanni Hislop and Jerod Elcock failed in their bid to capture silverware in the 200 metres event of yesterday's Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships at the Estadio Chan Chan in Trujillo Peru.

Hislop stormed home in fourth position in 20.84 seconds and his compatriot Elcock fifth in 21.13 seconds, a distant behind the eventual winner Christopher Taylor of Jamaica in 20.13 seconds. Taylor was followed in second by Tyrese Cooper of the United States 20.59 and third Derick de Souza Silva of Brazil in 20.77 seconds. Both Hislop and Elcock looked good in the earlier semi-finals, each finishing among the top two to advance to the final.

Hislop who contested race three of the semis, returned home in 21.45 seconds to seal a berth among the final eight while Elcock crossed the finish line in 21.27 seconds which was well behind Brazilian Silva, for a chance in the gold medal run.

T&T's Khalifa St Fort, the Girls' 100 metre winner on Friday was also scheduled to contest the half-lap event yesterday but did not appear. She has been a major force in the sprints for T&T, and showed just that when she repeated as Under-20 100 metres queen.

Meanwhile Nyoshia Cain also failed in her bid for gold medal at the London World Para Athletic Championships in the T44 event yesterday. Cain who received the bronze medal in the 100 metres dash last week, produced a sub-par 29.55 seconds which was not enough to earn a place in the final.

At the Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau Nahamas, T&T's Tyrique Horsford will today compete against a challenging field in the Boys Javelin. —WA
