Stapleton wins Van Sertima 5K

It was a tight battle between Sherwyn Stapleton and Alex Ekesa during the finishing moments of the Saturday's Van Sertima 5K in Chaguanas but it was the former prevailing.

On a cool afternoon, Stapleton held off Ekesa by three-hundredth of a second to win the race with a 15.06-clocking. Ekesa copped a silver medal in a time of 15.09 in an event which saw some 500 participants completing the race. 

In third place was Shirvan Baboolal in 15.28 while Nicholas Romany Elmo (15.57) and Lionel D'Andrade (16.36) filled the other two spots respectively.

In the women category, Jizzel Matas crossed first in 20.00 with Aniqua Bailey (20.35) in second place and third place was April Francis, with a time of 20.36.

Teresa Otero finished fourth in 20.41 and Zina Lesley placed fifth in a 21.22.
