AIU bans T&T sprint champ Ahye

The an nounce ment of the T&T team for the up com ing IAAF World Cham pi onships in Do ha, Qatar brought on mixed emo tions, ex cite ment with the prospect that two of the four mem bers of the cham pi on 4x400 me tres men's team will be back to de fend their re lay ti tle and de spair that star women's sprint er Michelle-Lee Ahye was left out af ter be ing sus pend ed.

On Thurs day, a tweet was post ed stat ing that the Ath let ics In tegri ty Unit (AIU) con firmed a pro vi sion al sus pen sion against the na tion al women's sprint cham pi on for a vi o la tion of the IAAF an ti-dop ing rules.

In a re lease al so on Thurs day, the Na tion al As so ci a tion of Ath let ics Ad min is tra tion of T&T (NAAATT) con firmed as much say ing: "NAAATT has been ad vised that in ac cor dance with Ar ti cle 7.6 of the IAAF's An ti-Dop ing Rules (ADR), the Ath let ics In tegri ty Unit (AIU) is sat is fied that Michelle-Lee Ahye has com mit ted an An ti-Dop ing Rule Vi o la tion and has is sued a No tice of Charge in ac cor dance with Ar ti cle 8 ADR.

"She was there by charged with com mit ting the fol low ing an ti-dop ing rule vi o la tion (the "Charge"): A com bi na tion of three missed tests and/or fil ing fail ures, as de fined in the In ter na tion al Stan dard for Test ing and In ves ti ga tions, with in the 12-month pe ri od be gin ning on June 23, 2018, specif i cal ly for (i) a Missed Test dat ed June 23, 2018, (ii) a missed test dat ed Feb ru ary 23, 2019 and (iii) a missed test dat ed April 19, 2019.

"She was pro vi sion al ly sus pend ed from the date of the no tice: Au gust 30, 2019. NAAATT notes that there were no ad verse an a lyt ic find ings, mean ing no pos i tive tests were record ed for any sub stances or meth ods as per the World An ti-dop ing Agency (WA DA) pro hib it ed list 2019. Michelle-Lee has been charged with miss ing three tests and or fil ing fail ures with in 12 months.

"Michelle-Lee has been al lowed to de fend this charge."

This means that T&T's women's re lay team will be led by for mer na tion al sprint cham pi on Kel ly Ann Bap tiste and will be made up with the likes of Se moy Hack ett, Ka maria Du rant, Re yare Thomas and Mauri cia Pri eto.

Re turn ing with the hope of re peat ing as cham pi on are Jereem Richards and Machel Ce de nio with the rest of the team in clud ing De on Lendore, On al Mitchell, Asa Guev era and Dar ren Al fred.

Two-time Olympic medal list Keshorn Wal cott will once again chase suc cess in the men's javelin event while And wuelle Wright will com pete in the men's long jump. Por tious War ren is the lone women's ath lete out on the field in the shot put.

The team will de part for a train ing camp in Do ha on Sep tem ber 18, which runs till the start of the Cham pi onships on Sep tem ber 27 and ends Oc to ber 6.

Ac cord ing to the re lease, the as so ci a tion has been work ing along side the an ti-dop ing unit to clear up the mat ter.

It said: "NAAATT is com mit ted to en sur ing a clean sport and has been as sist ing the AIU in the con duct of its ac tiv i ties. Sev er al of our se nior ath letes, in clud ing Michelle-Lee, were test ed be fore and dur ing the re cent Na tion al Open Cham pi onships.

"The as so ci a tion will con tin ue to work with its ath letes and the var i ous reg u la to ry agen cies to en sure com pli ance with all an ti-dop ing rules and reg u la tions."

T&T Olympic Com mit tee pres i dent Bri an Lewis re fused to con demn 27-year-old Ahye, who sprint ed to Com mon wealth gold last year.

"Peo ple are al ways so quick to rush to judge ment and jump to con clu sions. The due process must take place The whole is sue of where abouts some times can be (an) ad min is tra tive hic cup, it is se ri ous but gen er al ly and usu al ly its re al ly about the ath lete's sup port team help ing and as sist ing the ath lete to make sure that their where abouts process is up dat ed and that spe cif ic at ten tion is paid to it.

From the TTOC per spec tive I think it is very im por tant that the Olympic Com mit tee con tin ues and deep ens and in ten si fies its ed u ca tion and aware ness process, to make sure that our ath letes, Team TTO ath letes, are ful ly aware of the re quired process es, the im por tance of en sur ing the process es such as the where abouts forms and stuff that your agent and man agers and who ev er is your sup port team that they pay par tic u lar at ten tion 

So, due process will take its course in this case and as al ways I re main con fi dent and I know our ath letes take very se ri ous ly their oblig a tion to clean sport and to, en sur ing that they com ply with all the re quire ments of WA DA (World An ti-Dop ing) code."
