Ahye’s 11.07 highlights President’s Classic
Clayton Clarke :: Trinidad Guardian :: 08.04.2013Olympic and World Championships semifinalist Michelle Lee Ahye stole the spotlight at the second annual NAAA President Classic at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain on Saturday after speeding to victory in the women’s 100 metres in a 11.07 seconds.
Starting in lane six, the 2011 Pan American Junior champion established an early lead and pulled away from the field to reach the line ahead of the the Concorde duo of Nandelle Cameron (11.42) and Lisa Wickham (11.44).
Ahye’s time is a new personal best (pb) improving on her 11.19 set in California, US a year ago but there was no wind reading available at the meet to validate the swift clocking.
Carifta silver medallist Ayodelle Taffe was a double champion taking the boys Under-20 100m and 200m. Taffe (Abilene Wildcats) first clinched the 200m running a strong bend to come into the straight well ahead and cruised over the line in a personal best of 20.77 well ahead of Theon Lewis (Petrotrin PAP) 21.81 and Edwin Phillip (Concorde) 21.90.
Taffe ran a second pb of the day taking the 100m in 10.52. Club-mate Holland Cabrara took the runner-up spot (10.80) with Micah Ballantyne (Alpha) in third 10.82.
The 18-year-old then also helped his club to victory in the men’s 800m sprint medley relay. Abilene Wildcats clocked 1:29.62 to finish ahead of Neon Trackers (1:32.50) and Concorde (1:33.97).
Tacuma Sterling of Alpha was the winner of the men’s 100m in an close race clocking 10.71 edging Jonathan Holder (Concorde) 10.73 and Jesse Berkley (Simplex) 10.74 and Le Shawn Noel (UTT) 10.74. All four flashed across the line almost together. Fans had to wait on a photo finish for the winner.
Duane Herbert (Dovers) leaped to victory in the men’s long jump with a first round effort of 7.24 metres with Carifta boys U-17 bronze medallist Che Richard (Oasics) secured the silver in a pb of 7.02.
The Classic was hosted by the National Association of Athletic Administration (NAAA). NAAA president Ephraim Serrette said the meet was held to replace the Palo Seco Games which were cancelled this year.
“With the short-notice of the cancellation of the Palo Seco Games because of the condition of the field we felt we had to keep a meet for the athletes to keep them competitive. Last year’s meet was also held because the Hampton Games were called off as well.”
Serrette said he was happy with the turnout of athletes.
“I was pleased to see the lanes were filled and we had some quality athletes coming out and giving their best. This meet was not scheduled on the calendar. We will now have to sit down and probably make this meet an annual event and put it on the schedule and build on it to make it a regional meet and hopefully it to a grand prix meet.”
