Bascombe, Smith, Serville among 11 Carifta qualifiers

Shaniqua Bascombe, Avindale Smith and Rae-Anne Serville were outstanding on the opening day of the Carifta trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

The Under-17 trio led the way as 11 athletes attained qualifying standards for the March 31-April 2 Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas.

Bascombe dominated the Girls Under-17 100 metres final, winning in 11.89 seconds for a huge gap on second-placed Leah Bertrand (12.24). Bascombe's clocking was much faster than the 12.05 Carifta qualifying standard.

Smith made light work of the 49.50 seconds Boys Under-17 400m standard, romping to victory in the final in an impressive 47.90. Jordan Pope clocked 49.98 to finish a distant second.

Serville topped the Girls Under-17 400m final in 55.02 seconds, almost two seconds faster than the 57-flat standard. Natasha Fox, second in 56.50, also qualified for the Easter weekend meet.

Onal Mitchell and Che Lara finished one-two in the Boys Under-20 400m final. Both athletes bettered the 47.80 seconds standard, Mitchell clocking 47.39 and Lara 47.74.

Patrice Richards stopped the clock at 15.02 seconds to grab gold in the Girls Under-17 100m hurdles. She was the lone qualifier in the event.

Konnel Jacob and Clarence Hannibal secured berths on Trinidad and Tobago's Carifta Games team with impressive throwing in the Boys Under-20 discus. Jacob won with a big 50.90 metres effort, while Hannibal threw 47.26m to finish second.

Talena Murray had no problems throwing past the 40.00m Girls Under-20 javelin qualifying mark, achieving the goal five times in the six-round competition. Murray won easily, with a best effort on the day of 45.43m.

And Savion Joseph booked his ticket to Nassau with a 6.72m winning leap in the Boys Under-17 long jump.

Carifta trials day two action starts at 10 o'clock this morning.
