Diamond Vale Gov't dominate Nancoo Games

Diamond Vale Government School yesterday made it 32 wins from 32 years yesterday when it ran away Milo Kelvin Nancoo Primary School Games in the West B Zone. 

The school called the "Jewel of Diego Martin" won both the boys and girls categories but had to settle for the second spot in the march past competition being beaten by three points by Patna River Estate.

In front of a large crowd at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, Diamond Vale was boosted by the performances of eight-year-old Taqwan Charles and Ajania Taylor in the Under-9 boys and Girls categories. Hakim Salandy was superb winning all his events along with Nicola Sheppard, who dominated the U-15 girls' category, winning the 100 metres, 200m and 400m events. 

There were also great performances from Jeneice Burton, who was just touched off by Teshawana Pope of St Anthony's Girls Roman Catholic School, for the U-13 girl's victrix ludorum.

Carenage Girls turned defeat into victory when they came from behind to defeat Maraval RC in the girls' category of the West A Championship. This was the 19th Championship victory for the school which produced Michelle-Lee Ahye, the current Commonwealth Games 100m champion and the "Sportswoman of the Year" for the third time at the recently concluded First Citizens Sports Awards.

Main rival, Maraval RC, took the boys' category in impressive fashion as they posted a score of 161 points to nearest rival Dunross Preparatory which amassed 94 points.

Since the inception of the Milo Games in 1987, Diamond Vale has never lost the track and field meet, now called the Kelvin Nancoo Primary School Games. As a result, from Principal Yvonne Pinder leadership to current Principal David Weekes, the school has been dubbed the "The Jewel of Diego Martin".

Diamond Vale Government won six of the eight relays contested to assured themselves of both championships.

There were some excellent performances and Naomi Buckmire and Savion Adams both of Crystal Stream Government being a double winner on the day programme. Teshawna Pope of St Anthony's Girl Rc School speed to victory in there 100 and 200 metres events.

The day began in splendour as nineteen teams marched for supremacy in two Zones in the West Zonal Championships. At the end of the wonderful music of the Police band, Patna River Estate was adjudged winners from Diamond Vale Government with Diego Martin Government third with 166 points.

In the West A March Past, Maraval RC continued their dominance with an outstanding display to secured 174 points. The Principal of Maraval RC, Kern Campbell was as proud as a peacock to win his first championship and March Past title in his first year at the helm.

La Sieva RC was second with 158 points, with Westport SDA a close up third on 152.
