Record entries for 2012 World IndoorsTrinidad Guardian :: 12.02.2012A record of 160 countries have confirmed their intention of sending a team to the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships to be held at the Atakoya Athletics Arena, Instanbul, Turkey from March 911. This year 160 countries would be taking part in the chamionships. It was an increase from the 147 countries which took part in the 2008 edition in Valencia, Spain. The World Indoor Championships were first contested as the World Indoor Games in Paris, France in 1985 when 319 from 69 countries took part. Trinidad and Tobago has won two silver medals and participated in all previous games only missing the 1995 edition in Barcelona, Spain in 1995. Ian Morris raced to gold in the men’s 400m in 46.09 in Budapest, Hungary in 1989 then the men’s 4 x 400 team of Morris, Dazel Jules, Alvin Daniell and Neil De Silva finished second in the mile relay finals clocking 3:07:02 in Toronto, Canada in 1993. Athletes may also qualify based on achieving outdoor standards, performances must be achieved during the qualifying period of January 1, 2011, and February 27, 2011, and must be made during competitions organised or authorised by the IAAF. Wind-assisted performances and hand-times performances in the 60m, 100m, 60m hurdles and 100/110m hurdles will not be accepted. For running events of 400m and over, performances achieved on oversized tracks will not be accepted. Each member (country) is entitled to enter up to three athletes in each event but only two will be permitted to compete (except in the combined events and relays).
