Hope, Fermin strike goldKwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 23.02.2012Trinidad and Tobago's Karla Hope whipped her rivals in the women's 400 metres final, at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Invitational, in Texas, USA, on Monday. The Abilene Christian University (ACU) student got home in 55.62 seconds for a huge cushion on second-placed Amber Perry (56.77), of the United States. In the preliminary round, Hope had clocked 56.02 to lead all qualifiers into the final. Another T&T/Abilene Christian quarter-miler, Osei Alleyne-Forte produced a 50.20 seconds run to finish third in heat one and seventh overall in the men's 400m preliminaries. The top six advanced to the final. At the Vandal Collegiate meet, in Idaho, on the weekend, Washington State University student, Shawna Fermin struck gold in the women's 200m. The T&T athlete clocked 24.35 seconds to finish well ahead of American Kelly Jacka, the silver medallist in 25.03. Devery Robley picked up men's 800m silver for Butler Community College, at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region VI Indoor Championships, in Kansas. The T&T runner returned a time of one minute, 59.33 seconds. At the Virginia Tech Challenge, St Augustine's College student, Jameel Walcott clocked 1:55.27 to finish eighth in the men's 800m. And Aaron Roseman was fifth fastest in the men's 55m preliminaries, at the Rhode Island High School Indoor Championships, the T&T sprinter getting to the line in 6.74 seconds. In the final, though, the Lincoln High student was disqualified for a false start. |
