Quow in T&T World Indoor sevenClayton Clarke :: Trinidad Guardian :: 25.02.2012Renny Quow will head a seven-member national contingent to the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Instanbul, Turkey from March 9-11. Quow, 2009 World outdoor 400m bronze medallist, is expected to compete in the men’s 400m event. The 2006 World Junior champion dipped below the qualifying standard of 46.90 with his 46.70 clocking in Boston, USA on February 2. The Florida based athlete is one of three quartermilers who have attained the standards: Lalonde Gordon (46.43, 46.51) and Jarrin Solomon (46.55) are the other two. With only two eligible to run in Instanbul, the final pair has not been named. The three will be part of Trinidad and Tobago 4 X 400m relay quartet. Quow and Solomon were member of T&T’s team to the 2010 edition of the meet in Doha, Qatar. World and Olympic sprint relay silver medallist Marc Burns (men’s 60), Jamaal James (men’s 800, 4X400), Aleesha Barber (women’s 60m hurdles) and 18-year-old Jareem Richards (men’s 4x400) are the other team members. Sprinters Richard Thompson, Keston Bledman (men’s 60m) and two-time World Indoor finalist Cleopatra Borel (women’s shot put) have attained the World Indoor standards but have not been named in the T&T squad. Attempts to contact NAAA secretary/team manager Allan Baboolal on the available of the trio proved unsuccessful as calls to his cell number went unanswered. US Collegiate athletes Annie Alexander (women’s shot put) and Kai Selvon (women’s 60m) have surpassed the World Indoor marks but were not expected to be available as the 2012 NCAA Division one Track and Field Championships are carded for the same weekend as the World Indoors. Trinidad and Tobago has won two silver medals at the World Indoor Championships: Ian Morris in the men’s 400m finals (46.09) at the 1989 edition in Budapest, Hungary and the men’s 4x400 team of (Morris, Alvin Daniel, Dazel Jules and Neil De Silva) was second in the 1993 mile relay finals in Toronto, Canada in 3:07:02.
