Alexander misses podium in SEC Champs

Trinidad and Tobago thrower Annie Alexander just failed to earn a medal for Tennessee in the women's shot put yesterday at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, USA.

Alexander finished fourth with a 17.70-metre heave, two spots ahead of fellow T&T thrower, University of Georgia student Hilenn James, whose effort flew 15.43m.

Danielle Davis brought up the rear in the women's long jump for Auburn University with a 5.69m effort, and did not start in the 60m hurdles event.

Ade Alleyne-Forte failed to qualify for the men's 400m final with a fourth place finish in Heat One, clocking 47.86, while Jovon Toppin (49.30) suffered a similar fate in Heat Five after running in third.

Also yesterday, Aeisha McDavid was 11th overall in the USA Indoor Championship pentathlon in Alabama, after sixth place finishes in the women's 60m hurdles and shot put, 13th in the high jump and the long jump, and tenth over 800 metres.

Robert Collingwood, the University of Southern Mississippi junior, was tenth in the shot put with his best effort of 14.75m.

At the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Championships, Texas A&M's Wayne Davis II finished eighth and last in the men's 60m hurdles final, clocking 8.38. He qualified for the final with a 7.84 time a day earlier.

On Friday, Deon Lendore, also of Texas A&M, topped his heat to qualify for the men's 400m final with a 46.76 clocking, Zwede Hewitt (Baylor University) was disqualified for stepping on the line. Gavyn Nero did not start the 800m men's preliminaries.

But Hewitt did make it to the men's 200m decider, finishing as a fastest loser with the fifth best overall time of 21.19.

Ashlee Smith (McNeese State University) only just missed out on a medal in the women's shot put final, being fourth with a 14.07m throw yesterday, a day after securing silver in the 20-pound women's weight throw (18.21m).

Carisa Leacock (University of Iowa) finished at the bottom of the Big Ten Men's and Women's Indoor Championship field of 11 athletes in the women's triple jump, her best leap being 12.14m.

Nyoka Giles (University of Minnesota) failed to qualify for the women's 200m final with her time of 24.57 and Leacock was tenth overall in the women's long jump, her best jump being 5.76m.

Durell Busby (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) also qualified for today's 2012 Horizon League Indoor Championships 60m hurdles final in Ohio, topping his heat with a time of 8.50.

And in the Mid-American Conference Championships, also in Ohio, Kirlene Roberts (Central Michigan) qualified automatically for today's 60m final with a 7.60 clocking, after placing third in her heat.

Shawna Fermin of Washington State finished seventh in the women's 200m final of the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sport Federation Indoors in Seattle in 24.56.

On the East Coast in Boston, Shawn David (University of Maryland) could not reach the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor men's final after finishing 11th overall in a time of 49.64.
