Conference gold for Lendore, Selvon, Alexander, Busby, John

Trinidad and Tobago teenager Deon Lendore produced a superb run at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, in Texas, USA, yesterday, clocking a personal best 46.33 seconds to capture the men's 400 metres title.

On Saturday, 19-year-old Lendore had clocked an indoor best 46.76 to lead all qualifiers into the finals. He went even faster yesterday, the Texas A&M University freshman bettering his outdoor best of 46.50.

With the 46.33 run, Lendore moved into 17th spot on the 2012 IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) men's 400m indoor performance list. He is the leading T&T quarter-miler this season. Next best is Lalonde Gordon, who is currently 21st on the IAAF list at 46.43 seconds.

Another Trinidad and Tobago athlete, Zwede Hewitt, finished sixth in the Big 12 men's 200m finals in 21.36 seconds. In the preliminary round, the Baylor University senior was fifth fastest in 21.19.

Texas Tech University student Dellon Williams copped eighth spot in the men's long jump with a 7.09 metres leap.

At the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships, in Kentucky, Auburn University's Kai Selvon struck gold in the women's 60m dash in a personal best 7.20 seconds, improving on the 7.25 clocking she had produced in the qualifying round.

Selvon returned to the track for the women's 200m finals, getting home in 23.15 seconds to secure silver. She had clocked 23.37 in the preliminaries.

Annie Alexander was the class of the field in Saturday's women's shot put event.

The University of Tennessee senior earned gold with a 17.06m heave. Another T&T field athlete, University of Georgia sophomore Hilenn James, threw 15.56m to bag bronze. In the weight throw, Alexander was 15th with a 16.18m effort.

Louisiana State University (LSU) student, Kyron Blaise jumped 16.15m to pick up silver in the men's triple jump. He finished sixth in the long jump with a 7.41m leap.

Tennessee freshman Jamol James clocked 6.72 seconds to cop fifth spot in the men's 60m dash. LSU's Shermund Allsop was 14th overall in 6.85. In the 200m, James (21.58) and Allsop (21.74) were 13th and 17th, respectively.

And in the men's 400m, LSU's Ade Alleyne-Forte clocked 47.80 seconds for 14th spot overall. University of Florida student, Jovon Toppin was 25th in 49.30.

At the Horizon League Championships, in Ohio, Durell Busby won the men's 60m hurdles title in a Championship record 7.82 seconds. In the preliminary round, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior had clocked 8.05.

Deborah John earned double gold at the Summit League Championships, in Indiana. The North Dakota State University student won the women's 60m dash in 7.63 seconds and the 60m hurdles in a Championship record 8.49.

In Alabama, University of Southern Mississippi junior, Robert Collingwood seized Conference USA Championship silver in the men's shot put with an 18.03m heave—a new national indoor record. His twin brother and Southern Miss teammate, Richard Collingwood threw 15.76m to finish 10th. Robert was 10th in the weight throw with a 14.75m effort.

University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) freshman, Aeisha McDavid finished 11th in the women's pentathlon, accumulating 3,134 points in the five-discipline event. McDavid was sixth in the 60m hurdles (8.89 seconds), seventh in the shot put (10.62m), 10th in the 800m (2:40.51), 13th in the high jump (1.42m) and 13th in the long jump (4.89m).

In the individual women's triple jump event, McDavid was 15th with an 11.03m effort.

At the Southland Conference Championships, in Oklahoma, McNeese State University student, Ashlee Smith claimed silver in the women's weight throw with an 18.21m heave. She threw 14.07m for fourth spot in the shot put.

Kendall Bacchus bagged bronze in the men's 200m, at the Sun Belt Championships, in Tennessee. The Middle Tennessee State University sprinter got to the line in 21.68 seconds. He had clocked 21.65 in the qualifying round. Bacchus was 10th overall in the 55m dash in 6.45.

Florida International University (FIU) student, T'Keyah Dumoy secured bronze in the women's 55m dash in 7.11 seconds—seven-hundredths of a second slower than the 7.04 run she had produced in the preliminaries. Dumoy clocked 25.18 to finish 13th overall in the 200m.

At the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships, in Ohio, Central Michigan University sophomore, Kirlene Roberts finished sixth in the women's 60m finals in 7.60 seconds.

In Seattle, Washington State University athlete, Shawna Fermin was seventh in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championship women's 200m event in 24.56 seconds. In the 400m, Fermin finished eighth overall in 54.89.
