Nero bids for NACAC crownKwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 16.03.2012America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Cross Country Championship women's six-kilometre event, at the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain, today. Nero is a serious contender for top honours and could make history by becoming the first Trinidad and Tobago runner to achieve a top-three finish at the NACAC Cross Country Champs. In fact, T&T have never had a top-ten finisher. The country's best individual showings came in 2010 when Richard Jones copped 11th spot in the men's 8K and Samantha Shukla did the same in the women's 6K. Nero, Kema McShine and Thais Gutierrez will represent the red, white and black in today's women's 6K. The race is scheduled for four p.m. At 4.35, Matthew Hagley, Jules La Rode, Curtis Cox, Clarance Tobias, Roland Bartholomew, Collin Pereira and Kenroy Pierre will do battle for T&T in the men's 8K. Teams from United States, Canada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bahamas, Bermuda, Guatemala and T&T will be on show at the NACAC Championships. The Americans will defend their men's 8K and women's 6K team titles. Last year, at the Savannah, T&T bagged bronze in both senior team events, but did not have a team in either of the junior races. Canada are reigning team champions in the junior men's 6K and junior women's 4K events. Just one athlete, Mark London, wore T&T colours in an under-20 race in 2011. He finished 27th in the junior men's 6K. Today, Sowande Jackson, Kyle Johnson, Travis Diaz, Akeem Marshall, Nicholas Landeau and Jevon Joseph will represent the country in the junior men's 6K, while in the junior women's 4K, Donicia Antoine, Mickayla Ottley, Kechell Douglas and Eciesha Serapio will be on show. Action gets going at 2.45 p.m., with a 2K committee run.
