Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 29.03.2012

Jehue Gordon will run his 400 metres hurdles season opener at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, in Port of Spain, this weekend.

The 20-year-old Trinidad and Tobago athlete is expected to square off against Puerto Rico's Eric Alejandro in the Falcon Games men's one-lap hurdles, tomorrow.

Gordon, the reigning 400m hurdles world junior champion, is also listed for action in Sunday's 110m hurdles.

At the 2011 Falcon Games, held in Tobago, Gordon won the 400m hurdles in 50.11 seconds, beating Alejandro (50.28) into second spot.

Emmanuel Callender is also expected to be on show at the Stadium this weekend. The Jamaica-based sprinter was part of the T&T team that captured men's 4x100m silver at the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing, China.

The 2012 Falcon Games will also feature members of the T&T Carifta team, in their final warm-up ahead of the April 7-9 Games, in Bermuda.

Among the 45 athletes selected to represent T&T in Bermuda are Jereem Richards, Machel Cedenio, Keshorn Walcott and Kernesha Spann.

Richards, who was part of the T&T team that bagged men's mile relay bronze at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, earlier this month, is expected to challenge for the boys' under-20 200m title at Carifta 2012.

Cedenio captured the Carifta Games boys' under-17 200/400 double in Jamaica, last year. At this year's edition of the regional junior championships, he will campaign among the under-20s, and ought to be a contender for one-lap honours.

Walcott will bid for a hat-trick of boys' under-20 javelin titles in Bermuda. Last year, the Toco athlete retained his crown with a record-breaking 72.04 metres throw.

Two years ago, in the Cayman Islands, Spann struck gold in the Carifta Games girls' under-17 300m hurdles. In Bermuda, she will bid for honours in the girls' under-20 400m hurdles and 400m flat events.

Richards, Cedenio, Walcott, Spann and the rest of the T&T Carifta Games team will compete in club colours at the Crawford Stadium this weekend.

Falcon Games heats are scheduled to start at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

On day one, the opening ceremony takes place from three p.m., while the first event is at four. And on Sunday, the first final is at three p.m.

The Durly Lucas 10K will also be staged on Sunday, starting at six a.m.
