Walcott smashes CAC junior record

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 02.04.2012

Keshorn Walcott saved his best for last at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday, producing a huge 77.53 metres throw to smash his own Central American and Caribbean (CAC) junior (under-20) javelin record.

Walcott had no challengers for the Falcon Games men's javelin title, the Toco athlete's record-breaking throw giving him a huge cushion on silver medallist Kerron Browne (62.71m). Akim Phillips (54.20m) claimed bronze.

Walcott fouled on his first two attempts, but then threw 69.87m in round three to take the lead. After another foul in the fourth round, the two-time Carifta Games boys' under-20 champion produced a big 73.38m effort.

Not satisfied with that throw, Walcott, who turns 19 today, gave himself an early birthday gift, improving on the 75.77m CAC junior standard he had established at the Pan American Games, in Guadalajara, Mexico, last October.

Late yesterday, Jehue Gordon got revenge on Puerto Rican Eric Alejandro. Beaten by Alejandro in Saturday's men's 400 metres hurdles, Gordon turned the tables in the 110m hurdles. He won in 13.82 seconds, forcing Alejandro to settle for silver in 14.15.

Denny Gualbance completed the men's 800/1500 double when he won the metric mile in four minutes, 03.67 seconds. Guyana's Cleveland Thomas finished second in 4:05.48, beating Shirvan Baboolal (4:10.14) into third.

Alika Morgan whipped her rivals in the women's 1500m. The Guyanese runner clocked 4:56.90, while second-placed Dawnel Collymore got home in 5:08.12. Zara Suite-Stewart (5:38.52) was third.

Barbadian Charles Greaves captured gold in the men's long jump and triple jump events. Greaves jumped 7.15m in the long jump, and 14.63m in the triple jump.

Akeem Stewart struck gold in the men's shot put with a 16.69m heave. Hezekiel Romeo (16.56m) and Kesean Phillips (14.41m) secured the minor medals.

Sherisse Downey's 42.86m throw earned her a comfortable victory in the women's discus. Silver went to Cherisse Murray (37.87m), while bronze was bagged by Marielle Pierre (37.44m).

There were also victories for Maresa Ryan, Edson Moses and Precious George.

Ryan cleared the bar at 1.69m to capture the women's high jump title, George won the boys' under-17 javelin with a 50.63m throw, and Moses topped the boys' under-17 high jump with a 1.76m clearance.

Late on Saturday, Moriba Morain won the men's 200m title in 20.81 seconds, beating Haitian Jonathan Edward Juin (21.07) into second spot. Stann Waithe (21.52) finished third.

Kamaria Durant clocked 23.82 seconds to grab gold in the women's 200m. Nicole Davis picked up silver in 24.39, forcing Dominica's Luan Gabriel (24.40) to settle for bronze.

And Kenejah Williams emerged victorious in the boys' under-17 shot put with a 15.85m throw.

After press time, last night, Olympic sprint relay silver medallist Emmanuel Callender was scheduled to face the starter in the men's 100m final.

Early yesterday, Guyana's Cleveland Forde captured the Durly Lucas 10K title.

Forde crossed the finish line at the Queen's Park Savannah, near Queen's Royal College, in 32 minutes, 34 seconds, to beat Matthew Hagley (32:36) into second spot. Another Guyanese, Kelvin Johnson (32:47) finished third.

Tonya Nero had no problems securing the top prize in the women's race. The T&T International Half-Marathon champion completed the course in 37:17, almost two minutes faster than second-placed Morgan (39:10). Third spot was copped by Grenadian Kenisha Pascal (39:51).
