James wins in NashvilleKwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 03.06.2012Trinidad and Tobago's Jamaal James returned a time of one minute, 47.55 seconds to grab gold in the Music City Distance Carnival men's invitational 800 metres event, in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, on Saturday. In a close finish, James got the better of Sharif Webb by the narrowest of margins. The T&T half-miler was one-hundredth of a second faster than his American rival, Webb getting home in 1:47.56. Jamaican Aldwyn Sappleton (1:47.85) finished third. James' 1:47.55 run is his second fastest clocking this season. At the Mt SAC Relays in California, in April, he was fifth in the Olympic Development men's 800m in 1:47.27. T&T's Pilar McShine clocked 4:18.68 to cop fifth spot in the Music City Distance Carnival women's invitational 1500m. American athletes swept the top four positions, Sarah Bowman leading the way in 4:13.67. Amanda Dunne (4:14.21), Lauren Hagans (4:16.35) and Liz Costello (4:16.39) were second, third and fourth, respectively. Costello is the 2012 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championship women's six-kilometre gold medallist. She captured the title on March 17 at the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain, beating T&T's Tonya Nero into second spot. Grenadian Neisha Bernard-Thomas was the class of the field. She won in a meet record 2:01.21, slicing six-tenths of a second off the previous standard (2:01.81). Bernard-Thomas' clocking was almost a second faster than the 2:02.20 run produced by second-placed Kimarra McDonald of the United States. Another American, Heidi Dahl was third in 2:03.90. |
