Richards whips 'em at Carifta trials

Jereem Richards whipped his rivals in the boys' under-20 200 metres final, on day two of the Carifta trials, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

Richards came off the turn with a couple strides on the field. The Abilene athlete was equally impressive on the straight, romping to victory in 20.95 seconds.

Machel Cedenio's 400-metre strength was unable to propel him past Richards in the second half of the race, the 2012 World Junior Championship one-lap finalist settling for the runner-up spot in 21.32.

Both Richards and Cedenio bettered the 21.40 qualifying standard.

Jonathan Farinha clocked 21.58 to cop third spot. He was faster, however, in the semis, getting home in 21.24 to finish second to Cedenio (21.15) in heat three.

Nineteen athletes achieved Carifta standards yesterday. Of that total, six had already qualified on Saturday. Richards and Farinha were among the 13 new qualifiers, while Cedenio was part of the elite group of six that hit qualifying marks on both days of the meet.

Mark London addressed the selectors by qualifying in the boys' under-20 1,500m on Saturday, and followed up yesterday by winning the 800m in one minute, 53.03 seconds—almost a full second faster than the 1:54.00 Carifta standard.

Another boys' under-20 1,500m qualifier, Akeem Marshall made light work of the 16:20.00 5,000m standard, dominating his rivals with a 16:03.14 clocking.

Ruebin Walters completed the boys' under-20 hurdles qualifying double when he finished second in the 400m hurdles in 52.30 seconds, trailing Barbadian Kion Joseph (51.82) to the line.

Che Richards, already a qualifier in the boys' under-17 long jump, did a double of his own. He jumped a wind-assisted 14.37 metres for victory in the triple jump, landing well beyond the 13.80m mark set by the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA).

And Chelsea James made the girls' under-17 discus standard look like child's play, throwing the implement 39.16m to top the field, beating Shaiann Charles (38.73m) into second spot. On Saturday, James qualified in the shot put.

The Trinidad and Tobago team for the March 29-April 1 Carifta Games, in Nassau, Bahamas, is expected to be named this week.
