London on show at Schools Champs

Many of the athletes who achieved qualifying standards at the Carifta trials on the weekend will be back at the Hasely Crawford Stadium today and tomorrow, competing at the National Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships.

Mark London, a double qualifier at the trials, is expected to chase another double at the schools meet. Last year, the Bishop's High School, Tobago runner captured the boys' under-20 middle distance double. He won the 800 metres in one minute, 55.24 seconds and the 1,500m in 4:12.89.

London's efforts helped Bishop's earn the champion school boys' title. And for the 20th year on the trot, Tobago emerged as zonal champions. London is the 2012 Carifta Games boys' under-20 800m gold medallist.

The 2012 champion school girls' and mixed titles went to Toco Secondary.

The Toco school will again be a force to reckon with at the Championships. The team includes another double qualifier at the Carifta trials, Akeem Marshall. On the weekend, Marshall clocked 4:05.10 to finish second to London (4:00.38) in the boys' under-20 1,500m. And in the 5,000m, the Toco Secondary student was dominant, romping to victory in 16:03.14.

Toco Secondary will also be represented by Donicia Antoine, Cherisse Murray, Akeel Edwards and Francis Louis.

The Queen's Royal College team is also packed with talent. Among those expected to be in the hunt for precious metal are Asa Guevara and 2012 Carifta Games boys' under-17 200m champion Jonathan Farinha.

The Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships get going at nine a.m. today. Tomorrow's programme starts at 10.
