Nero nabs 1,500 gold at Southern Games

T&T’s Tonya Nero was the runaway winner of the women’s 1,500 metres on the first day of competition of the Southern Games at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, yesterday. The Athletic Central runner stopped the clocked in 4:50.31, to beat Dawnel Collymore of Memphis Pioneers, who crossed in 5:01.17. In third was Elia Nero of Neon Trackers in 5:29.52.

Kenya’s Silas Kisorio won the men’s 1,500m in 4:01.27 in an exciting race, to finish ahead of Thomas Cougheir of Canada (4:01.70) and 2011 winner Robert Novak (4:05.17). American Shayla Mahan retained her 100 metres title in women’s invitational event in 11.60 seconds, with Carifta selectee Lisa Wickham (11.93) in second ahead of her Concorde teammate Ayana Concorde (12.07).

The 24-year-old was just a shade behind her 2012 winning time of 11.54. Mahan will be going to retain her 200m crown later today. Kamaria Durant (Simplex) took the women’s open event in 11.78 with Carifta picks Aaliyah Telesford (Point Fortin New Jets) 12.12 and Kayelle Clarke (Petrotrin PAP) 12.38 taking the other two places, respectively.

Antoine Adams (St Kitts/Nevis) ran away with the men’s invitational 100m in 10.62, beating T&T’s Moriba Morain into second (10.65) and Shakeim Greaves (Barbados) into third (10.70). Last year’s winner Jamaican Sheldon Mitchell had to settle for the fifth spot.

Le Sean Noel of the University of T&T (UTT) captured the men’s 100m open while Ayodelle Taffe (Abilene Wildcats) secured the boys Under-20 dash (10.99). Sprint phenom Adel Colthrust (Southern Athletics) dominated the boys U-15 100m, getting to the line in 11.61, more than one second ahead of second-placed Joseph Watson (D’Abadie Progressive) in 12.62. Jeunice Maxime led a Memphis Pioneers sweep in the girls U-17 100m winning in 12.72 while clubmate Kadeem Campbell took the boys U-17 event in (11.44). Jenea Spinks of Neon Trackers copped the girls U-15 100m (12.86).

Andre Andrews (Unattached) topped the men’s javelin field with a throw of 55.72 from Precious George (Warriors) 52.88 while Portious Warren (Toco TAFAC) landed the women’s shot put crown with a distance of 12.67. The Petrotrin Palo Seco veteran duo of Gwendolyn Smith (12.53) and Geraldine George (12.05) filled the minor places.

Up to late yesterday, the 400m, 4x100m, women’s long jump and men’s high jump were being contested. Action continues today with the 200m, 800m, 3000m, 5000m, 4x400m, women’s javelin, men’s shot put, women’s high jump and men’s long jump. Jamaican cyclist Marlo Rodman returned yesterday to cop the 1,500m invitational race fater retaining his 20-lap title on Thursday. Second was T&T’s Varun Maharajh with American Zack Kovalcik taking third.

The 4,000m International eight laps also finish in the same order with Rodman first and Maharajh and Kovalcik, second third, respectively.
