Romeo breaks shot put record

Hezekiel Romeo established a new national junior shot put record, in Havana, Cuba, on Saturday.

The Trinidad and Tobago athlete threw the iron ball 17.32 metres to break the national boys' under-20 record for the 7.26-kilogramme (16-pound) implement.

Robert Collingwood is the T&T under-20 record holder with the 6kg shot. He set the 18.99m standard in 2009.

Romeo's big 17.32m effort earned him gold at the Copa Cuba, the 18-year-old thrower beating Cuba's Isidro Portuondo (16.90m) into second spot.

Another T&T athlete, Quincy Wilson seized silver in the Copa Cuba men's discus event. Wilson threw 58.65m, his best ever season opener, to secure second spot, behind Cuban Jorge Fernandez (62.12m).

At the Willie Williams Classic, in Arizona, USA, T&T quartermiler Jarrin Solomon topped the men's 400 metres field in 45.93 seconds to move to the top of the 2013 world outdoor performance list.

Kernesha Spann recorded a one-lap double at the West Texas A&M Classic. The Western Texas College student clocked 56.86 seconds for gold in the women's 400m. And in the 400m hurdles, she triumphed in one minute, 03.97 seconds.

At the Louisiana Classics meet, Louisiana State University (LSU) sprinter Shermund Allsop bagged bronze in the men's 100m dash in a wind-assisted 10.48 seconds. Ade Alleyne-Forte finished 10th overall in 10.73, while Kyron Blaise (10.93) was 14th. In the 200m, Alleyne-Forte picked up bronze in 21.73 seconds.

In South Carolina, Jameel Walcott finished fifth in the Shamrock Invitational men's 800m. The St Augustine's College student got home in 1:54.53. And in the women's 200m, University of Delaware freshman Chelsi Campbell was 25th overall in 25.31 seconds.
