Gordon gets revenge at Falcon Games

Kwame Laurence :: Trinidad Express :: 23.03.2013

Trinidad and Tobago's Jehue Gordon got his revenge on Puerto Rican Eric Alejandro, on day one of the Falcon Games, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday.

At the 2012 Falcon Games, Gordon suffered a rare 400 metres hurdles defeat on home soil, finishing second to Alejandro. Yesterday, however, the 2010 world junior champion flipped the script, winning the men's one-lap hurdles in 49.65 seconds for a comfortable cushion on Alejandro, the visitor clocking 50.66 to seize silver. Bronze went to Barbadian Kion Joseph in 51.46.

Halfway through the race, Gordon had the edge on Alejandro. He extended his lead, the 21-year-old T&T athlete coming off the final turn about five metres ahead of his Puerto Rican rival. Last year, Alejandro reeled in Gordon on the home straight. But there would be no repeat in 2013, Gordon finishing stronger than Alejandro to claim an easy victory.

T&T sprinter Moriba Morain produced a superb run to win the men's 200m final. Morain got to the line in 21.01 seconds, while his compatriot, 16-year-old Jonathan Farinha clocked an impressive 21.10 to finish second. Guyana's Stephon James (21.27) was third.

Kamaria Durant was the class of the field in the women's 200m, the T&T sprinter striking gold in 23.42 seconds. Barbadian Shakera Reece clocked 23.76 to seize silver, while bronze was bagged by T&T junior Kayelle Clarke (23.85).

There were two sections in the men's 800m finals, and as fate would have it, the winner of each race produced the same time—one minute, 53.31 seconds. But it was section two winner, Cliffton Sylvester who got the gold, the T&T athlete running three-thousandths of a second faster than Kenyan Silas Kisorio, winner of the first section.

Sylvester's clocking was 1:53.307, while Silas' was 1:53.310.

Barbadian Jerrad Mason finished second in section one and third overall in 1:54.11.

Domonique Williams got home in 2:13.77 for a comfortable victory in the women's 800m. The T&T teenager beat American Najah Floyd (2:15.56) into second spot. Another T&T runner, Dawnel Collymore (2:17.64) finished third.

discus with a 42.66 metres throw. Barbadians Tristan Whitehall (41.31m) and Kemar Holder-Edghill (41.24m) earned silver and bronze, respectively.

And Kenejah Williams dominated the boys' under-18 shot put. He produced a 17.64m effort, while his fellow T&T athlete, Isaiah Taylor finished a distant second with a 12.20m throw.

The Falcon Games continue from nine a.m. today, at the Crawford Stadium.
