Richards romps to Falcon Games 400 victory

Jereem Richards produced a strong finish at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, yesterday, to win the Falcon Games men's 400 metres final.

The 19-year-old Trinidad and Tobago athlete completed his lap of the track in a personal best 46.51 seconds, forcing Guyana's Stephon James to settle for silver in 46.96. Jehue Gordon, winner of the 400m hurdles on day one, clocked 46.99 to pick up bronze in the flat event.

Gordon was in front, coming off the final bend. Richards, though, was stronger on the home straight, surging to the front to grab gold. James, too, had more gas than Gordon at the end of the race, narrowly beating the one-lap hurdler in the battle for silver.

Dana Massiah topped the women's 400m field in 54.64 seconds, finishing well ahead of her fellow T&T athlete, Romona Modeste, the silver medallist in 55.82. American Najah Floyd clocked 55.90 to bag bronze.

For three-quarters of the race, it seemed a tight contest. Massiah, however, pulled away, coming home, to make it a race for silver, Modeste proving to be stronger than Floyd in the duel for the runner-up spot.

Late yesterday, Nandelle Cameron won the women's 100m title, and Moriba Morain completed the men's sprint double with victory in the century.

Cameron clocked 11.46 seconds to beat Concorde teammates Lisa Wickham (11.56) and Ayanna Hutchinson (11.69) into second and third, respectively.

And in the men's 100m final, Morain was first to the line in a wind-assisted 10.33 seconds, just getting the better of Barbadian Levi Cadogan, the runner-up in 10.34. American Woodrow Randall clocked 10.41 to claim bronze.

Americans Celriece Law and Gabby Mayo finished one-two in the women's 100m hurdles, clocking 13.91 seconds and 13.96, respectively.

Boys' under-20 110m hurdler, Ruebin Walters was first past the finish line in an impressive 13.66 seconds.

And in the girls' under-18 100m hurdles, Jeminise Parris was a comfortable winner in 14.59. Second-placed Kermisha Serapio clocked 15.25.

Shaunna Downey emerged victorious in the women's discus with a 41.20m throw, beating her sister, Sharisse Downey (39.91m) into second spot.

Chelsea James produced a 37.15m effort to capture the girls' under-18 discus title. Akeem Stewart threw the iron ball 17.44m to triumph in the men's shot put. Kenejah Williams produced a big 50.85m throw to win the boys' under-18 discus. And Atiba Wright jumped 7.25m to top the men's long jump field.

Early yesterday, Kenyan Kisorio Silas won the Durly Lucas 10K in 32 minutes, 26 seconds. T&T runners, Richard Jones (32:27) and Matthew Hagley (32:35) finished second and third, respectively.

T&T's Tonya Nero won the women's race easily, completing the course--which started at the Queen's Park Savannah, near Whitehall, and finished close to Queen's Royal College—in 37:31. Grenadian Kenesha Pascall (39:39) copped the runner-up spot, ahead of Jenelle Nedd (40:46).
